SAVE OUR SCHOOLS

Save our Schools demo Save our Schools demo

The Green Party is the only party opposed to the privatisation of Croydon’s secondary, primary and infant schools under the guise of transformation into academies. We believe that the pupils and teachers of schools like Haling Manor deserve better than being treated as a business opportunity.

On Friday 7th November, it was announced that Addington High and Westwood Language College have been saved from closure.
Ashburton Community School, Selsdon High, Haling Manor and Archbishop Lanfranc remain threatened with transformation into academies, but this U-turn by the Croydon Council represents a significant victory for the diverse range of groups who joined together in October to form the “Save Our Schools” movement and campaign against the creeping privatisation of our schools.
Studies repeatedly prove that academies are more expensive to run, lack accountability, operate covert selection procedures, exclude high numbers of pupils and circumvent staff protections over pay and conditions. No local council has been elected on a manifesto of introducing academies, and it is our belief that decisions with such far reaching consequences demand full, frank and open public consultation.
