Party Political Broadcast 2008
Sian Berry on the Political Slot
The Green Party increased its vote by 44% in the European elections on 4th June.
London Green MEP Jean Lambert has been re-elected to her third term in the European Parliament.
The Greens received 10.9% of the votes in London, up 2.5% from our vote share in 2004 moving up from 8th to 5th place.
Much more than an eco pressure group
- a real alternative
The Green Party is more than an environmental group. In spite of what lazy journalism might have you believe, we are a fully fledged and mature political party.
The Green Party has policies covering everything from education, crime, health care and the economy and public services to housing, energy and foreign policy.
In fact, so complete is our manifesto of realistic and progressive policy, both Labour and Conservative alike "borrow" from us and then dismiss us as a pressure group. Don't believe the hype.
Remember Gordon Brown's recent annoucement of a "green new deal"? It is not hard to see where he gets his better ideas...

Croydon Greens and local shopkeepers demanding the council ACT NOW! |
|
Following our successful ACT NOW campaign, Croydon Council have belatedly decided to "opt in" to the Sustainable Communities Act. However, they have so far ignored the spirit of the Act as they have chosen not to form Citizens' Panels. Once again they have shown they prefer "top down" approaches over listening to local people. |
|
The Sustainable Communities Act gives power to local people to help determine how to spend government money ear-marked for sustainable community projects. Citizens' Panels will be able to recommend variations in the business rates to help local business compete on a more level playing field with big business, as well as any number of other innovations. The Croydon Green Party want to help give the people of Croydon a voice in their sustainable future. So far at least, it seems the Tory council aren't interested in listening. |

Help prevent an incinerator in Croydon |
||
Last year, the Croydon Green Party warned that it suspected the South London Waste Partnership would lead to plans for the mass burning of waste in Croydon. Tory councillors have accused us of scaremongering but with a £billion contract tender now released for the construction and operation of an incinerator, our concerns have been proved justified. Incineration will be hugely profitable for a tiny few living far away from the deadly toxic smoke, but a disaster for the people of Croydon. Very few people were even aware such plans were being considered. If want to be alerted to the next stage of the consultation, please sign up below and we will keep you informed. |
